All the soldiers in the Soviet Army that commit suicide are considered deserters. Their bodies are buried in secret locations at night, sometimes close to where the enemy gets buried. This picture's story begins south of Minsk, where the artist served in the military. A fellow soldier, Private Leonov, committed suicide. When his mother arrived to visit her son, she was told that he is dead by the commander of the division. Everyone refused to tell her where the body was. The mother was told that Leonov deserted the platoon. Her doubled eyes display confusion and agony. The soldiers erected a cross in an undisclosed location and drank tea in remembrance of his suffering spirit.
